Pre-Season Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist

A model-first checklist for bringing a stored motorcycle back into service: documents, tires, controls, lights, fluids, chassis, drivetrain, and a controlled test.

A motorcycle that has been stored needs more than a charged battery and fresh fuel. Time can change pressure, fluid condition, seals, electrical connections, and exposed metal even when the odometer does not move. Rodents, corrosion, leaks, and earlier damage can also remain hidden until the bike is disturbed.

This checklist uses the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's T-CLOCS structure. It is a memory aid, not a specification sheet: use the owner's manual for pressures, fluid types, adjustment methods, wear limits, fastener torque, and the procedure for returning your exact motorcycle from storage.

Before turning the key

  • Find the owner or service manual for the exact model and year.
  • Review how the motorcycle was prepared for storage and what work was deferred.
  • Check the floor and motorcycle for fuel, oil, coolant, brake-fluid, or suspension-fluid leaks.
  • Inspect wiring, intake and exhaust openings, and the airbox area for damage or nesting material.
  • Confirm the battery case and cables are not swollen, cracked, loose, or corroded.
  • If fuel condition or storage procedure is uncertain, do not guess—follow the manufacturer guidance or use a workshop.

T — Tires and wheels

  • Measure pressure cold and set it for the specified load.
  • Inspect tread, cuts, cracking, bulges, punctures, and unusual wear.
  • Check rims or spokes, valve stems, bearings, and visible fasteners.
  • Confirm each brake can hold the motorcycle and inspect pads, discs, and visible leakage.

Do not use a generic pressure or tread figure from the internet. The motorcycle label/manual and applicable local law control the requirement.

C — Controls

  • Move the handlebars through their full range and check for binding or cable tension.
  • Check levers, pedals, pivots, cables, hoses, and routing.
  • Confirm the throttle moves freely and closes as specified.
  • Verify clutch and brake free play or hydraulic operation using the manual.

L — Lights and electrics

  • Inspect and secure battery terminals before energizing the system.
  • Test low and high beam, tail light, both brake-light switches, indicators, horn, and required warning lights.
  • Look for damaged insulation, pinched wiring, loose connectors, and corrosion.
  • Confirm the engine stop switch and side-stand or other interlocks operate as documented.

O — Oil and other fluids

  • Check engine oil using the exact hot/cold, stand, and level-ground procedure.
  • Check coolant only when safe and as the manual describes.
  • Inspect brake and clutch reservoirs, hoses, master cylinders, and calipers for level and leakage.
  • Check fuel lines, tank area, and connections before starting.
  • Review time-based replacement requirements; low mileage does not make old fluid new.

C — Chassis and final drive

  • Inspect the frame, steering, swingarm, suspension, and visible fasteners for damage or play.
  • Check fork and shock surfaces for leaks.
  • For a chain, inspect slack at several points, lubrication, links, sprockets, guides, and sliders.
  • For a belt or shaft, follow its distinct inspection and service procedure.
  • Confirm luggage and accessories are secure and do not interfere with controls or suspension.

S — Stands

  • Inspect the side and center stands for damage.
  • Confirm springs and retention work and the stand returns or stays in the specified position.
  • Test any stand interlock exactly as the manual directs.

First start and controlled test

Start only after the static inspection is complete and the area is ventilated. Watch warning lights and listen for abnormal operation without placing hands near moving or hot parts. Stop immediately for fuel leakage, oil-pressure warnings, overheating, smoke, severe noise, or unstable running.

Before normal traffic, perform a short, low-speed test in a safe area. Confirm steering, clutch, throttle, gear selection, suspension, and both brakes. Recheck for leakage and loose parts afterward.

Record what you found

Save the inspection date, current mileage, pressure readings, battery or fluid work, defects, and repairs in Vojo Garage. Convert remaining work into specific maintenance items rather than one “spring service” note.
